Paris is the capital and Largest city of France . The city is built on the arc of river Seine. The city proper has about 2 million residents (1999 census: 2,147,857). The Greater Paris metropolitan area has about 11 million residents (1999 census: 11,174,743). France’s capital enjoys la crème de la crème for just about everything from architecture and art to fine cuisine and fashion.Discover Paris' charms by sipping a café au lait at a sidewalk café, strolling atmospheric hidden rues, and flitting about between its many monuments and museums. Paris is served by two principal airports: Orly Airport, and the international airport Charles De Gaulle .
Top-tier accommodations in Paris practically define class, while B&Bs and boutique properties set the standard in charm. Still, be aware that not all French hotels share American standards when it comes to amenities (for example, unless you’re staying at a four-star hotel, you should not expect both a shower and a bath).
French cuisine needs no introduction – it is almost universally excellent. Paris is also very well known for its North African cuisine. Save some room to sample some of the city’s excellent crêpes as well. Just like in the theatre, a red velvet curtain in the brasserie entrance is drawn back to reveal a scene of different kind, one where an usher, dressed in sober attire, takes your coat and guides you to your table to present the culinary program.
The Eiffel Tower is the most recognizable landmark in Paris and is known worldwide as a symbol of France. Named after its designer, Gustave Eiffel, it is a premier tourist destination, with over 5.5 million visitors per year. The tower received its 200,000,000th guest on November 28, 2002. In the year 2000, flashing lights and several high power searchlights were installed on the tower. Since then the light show has become a nightly event. The search lights on top of the tower make it a beacon in Paris' night sky.
